Monument record 8680 - Ardveenish

A125 (NF708031) The site of MacNeil's kelp factory, built c. 1832, now occupied by the Presbytery. The enclosure wall with several blocked arched gateways survives.

The blocked openings along the northen boundary wall, adjacent to the tidal zone are extant. There is also an additional small square stone built 'pier' that extends into the the tidal area from the main wall at the north-eastern corner; this feature looks roughly contemporary with the boundary wall. The area along the southern boundary wall of this site was being redeveloped in 2018 / 2019. The southern boundary wall (with blocked archways) was recorded prior to being demolished and areas of the site underwent archaeological evaluation. Only the area adjacent to the southern wall indicated any archaeological remains. This area was subsiquently excavated ahead of development and found the footings of earlier buildings. These are likely to be associated with the kelp factory, these remains may have been of lean-to type structures abutting the boundary wall. No significant archaeological finds were recovered during these works.
