What may be a single roofed shieling-hut is depicted on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Island of Lewis, Ross-shire 1852, sheet 19). Three unroofed buildings which may be shieling-huts are shown on the current edition of the OS 1:10000 map (1972).
Information from RCAHMS (AKK) 24 September 1997.
The description and survey of this site by A.Campbell (2010)) would strongly suggest that this site was originally a prehistoric monument, likely a chambered cairn. James Chapmans survey (1807) represented on W.Johnson's 'Plan of the Island of Lewis' (1821) depicts four parishes boundaries meeting at 'Stacksal'.

The meeting of the parish boundaries on Stacaiseal is also visible on the Chapman/Gibbs Map following its recent availability.
