NLO: Scalpaigh (Scalpay) [name centred NG 23 95].
24th February 1885, ST CLAIR, age unknown, not registered, wooden lugger, 4 tons, 4 crew, Master and Owner J . Morrison, Scalpay, Harris. Departed Scalpay for fishing, in ballast. Sank, subsequently raised. 4 lives lost. Wind S8. W. side of Loch Bhrallum, Lewis, Hebrides.
Source: PP Abstracts of Shipping Casualties on Coasts, or in Rivers and Harbours of the UK July 1884-85 (1887 [C.5094] LXXIV.247).
NMRS, MS/829/68 (no. 1996).
The map sheet assigned to this record is arbitrary. The location of Loch Bhrallum cannot be established from the available map evidence, but the circumstances of the loss suggest that it is situated near Scalpay.
The loss is not noted by I G Whittaker (1998), presumably on account of the vessel having been subsequently raised..
