Full Description
SABS 30: Moine Dhonnachaidh modern quarry and dump NB 37348 53575
Recent dumping and quarrying of soil and stone marked on the current edition OS map. There are the remains of stony mounds, almost totally quarried away. Stones and large boulders are scattered through the topsoil of these mounds, above the peat, which can be seen in section up to 1m thick. No pottery or other artefacts were seen in the sections through these mounds. It is possible that they were once shielings or structures, but if so, they have been almost entirely removed as to be unrecognisable. There are shielings on the 1st edition map (1853) (= SMR 3145), but these are on the north west side of the burn, further to the north west of this site, which is around 20m south east of the burn on higher ground. This quarry post-dates the mid-nineteenth century as it is not marked on the 1st edition map (1853) and is at the end of a modern track to the west of Baile an Truiseil.
