Full Description

NB1210142446. Remains of substantial group of cellular buildings. Chamber A 4.9 m x 2.4 m of drystone walling and 0.9 m high. Chamber B 3.5 m x 2 m. Chaber C 2.9 m x 2 m. A protective wall curves for some six metres back from the cliff face, a Cist 90 cm x 50 cm has been robbed out with the roof slabs lying askew.
Note: Niel MacLeod in the first decade of the seventeenth century occupied this island and withstood a siege by the Scottish Crown and the MacKenzies for some three years before submitting and being transported to Edinburgh and hanged at the Market Cross. The cellular structure most likely represents the living quarters of this period and the summit structure, the lookout post [SMR14956], which has an almost 360 degree view of the surrounding seas of this almost inaccessible island.
