Full Description
A semi circular enclosure and circular mound located on a small headland between the southwestern end of Traigh Seilebost, and a smaller beach further to the SW.
This site is in a machair environment and comprises of a substansial bank and ditch that enclose a flat topped mound on its landward side. The north, east and western sides of the mound are on bare rock above the coastal edge; this is presumably the result of episodes of environmental erosion .
All features are covered with grassed over wind blown sand, the ditch and bank shows evidence of some tumbled stone in one small area; other than that no structural elements are visible. Approximate dimensions for the ditch and bank are 63m in length with width of 10m
The mound is steep sided with a flat top and has 7 shallow concave depressions in it. The mound has a diameter of approximatly 20m across the top & 33m across the base, height is 2m +.
There are no indications of this defensive feature on any maps and the small headland is not named. Potentially the site went out of use due to changes in the coast line.
The visible features would seem to indicate an Iron Age - Early Medieval date for the feature; however this site would really benefit from topographical survey and further investigation.
