Full Description

This building is a four bay (rear elevation), single storey with a single pitch roof. Four square headed door entrances and a single bay to front. The original single chimney stack has been removed and later asbestos concrete roofing sheets replaced earlier roofing material. Dimesions 9m x 6m. The 6”1st edition Ordnance Survey map sheet (1849) indicates undeveloped land on this site at that time ; however, the cadastral plan of Stornoway of 1850 shows the site was under development shortly afterwards; interestingly the building bears no annotation. The rectangular structure depicted, set back from the road is consistent with later maps, but any cell block is not clearly shown until the 25” 1st edition Ordnance Survey map sheet (1895). This site was the location of the former police station (demolished c.1970) and this remaining building was the former cell block, there is an adjacent storage building now used as a garage. The existing structure is in poor condition and is currently used as a storage shed.
