Full Description

While visiting the site following a human remains report, the owner of the croft Mr W.Hollister showed me the location of the souterrain. The collapsed entrance had been purposely sealed, however the large stone elements were clearly visible. Mr Hollister had been inside the tunnel previously and described the large stone slabs that made up the walls and ceiling. The souterrian appears to run towards the large grassy mound to the east. The mound area comprises of a series of grass and stone dykes some of which have been subject to coastal erosion. The souterrain may also have continued toward the west; however coastal erosion and modern disturbance is in evidence here. Some of the dykes may be associated with earlier Iron Age settlement ; however this area also had a pre-clearance settlement on it as well as later phases of crofting settlement up to the present day. There is also the wider association with the Iron Age site at Hornish Piont.
