Re-alignment of the Back-Tolsta road, to the north of Gress River, resulted in the exposure of the capstones of a well preserved souterrain. On examination this proved to have a complex plan with two main passages merging into one. There was a maximum 10m exposure of the longest passage, and all three ends were blocked by sterile sand which had come in through the roof. Animal bone with unambiguous signs of butchering was present covering the capstones was a soil layer c. 0.25m thick containing bone, shell, pottery and small stones.
