(NF 74903439) Dun Altabrug (NR)
OS 6"map, Inverness, 2nd ed., (1904)
The ruins of Dun Altabrug are slightly oval, measuring 31ft east-west and 27ft north-south, within a wall 9 to 12ft thick. In 1914, the interior of the wall averaged about 4ft in hieght, but the outside was broken down on the north and west. The destroyed entrance ran through the wall in a north by east direction and was about 3ft wide. Between the dun and the north-eastern edge of the island there was an enclosure surrounded by the remains of a stone wall about 6ft broad and 2 to 4ft high. The remains of a causeway, 33 yards long, connect the dun to the northern shore of the loch.
RCAHMS 1928.
Above confirmed.
Re-surveyed at 1/2500.
Visited by OS (N K B) 13 May 1965.
Current AP's & lidar confirm the above. The circular 'enclosure' is smaller than the Dun and is sited infront of the causeway, approx 5m diameter and only visible on the lidar image.
